HISTORY
In the fourteenth century, Palazzo Vecchio and the surrounding lands,
worked by a brotherhood of peasant monks, was owned by the "Ospedale
degli Innocenti" of Florence.
Palazzo Vecchio became the property of the Casagli family in the
eighteenth century. History tells us that it was the birthplace of
Luigi Chiarini, an eminent scholar of Arabic and Hebrew
(1789-1832) who was sent to the University of Warsaw to teach
ecclesiastical history after his ordination as an abbot around
1814.
In the early years of the twentiest century Palazzo Vecchio was
purchased by the Istituto Tecnico Agrario Angelo Vegni delle Capezzine,
later becoming the property of Count Riccardo Zorzi in 1952.
In 1982 the farm took the name Fattoria di Palazzo Vecchio and the new
owners started a project to produce and market Vino Nobile di
Montepulciano. The owners Marco Sbernadori and Alessandra Zorzi,
remodelled the old wine cellar beneath the building and dedicated five
hectares of vineyard, called "Vigna del Bosco" and "Vigna Valiano", to
wine production.
Experimental production began in 1988, with the first excellent results
coming in 1990.
LOCATION
Located in the Valiano area - geographically separated
from Montepulciano by the Val di Chiana - the farm stands at an
elevation of 350 metres (1000 ft). Its hilly position offers a
ventilated climate that provides a natural defence against bacterial
aggression.
