LOCATION
Tramonti is located about a mile southeast of Castellina in Chianti, which
is approximately 15 miles south of Florence and 10 miles north of Siena,
in the heart of Tuscany and the Chianti Classico area. The name has been
associated with its location in documents dating back almost a thousand years
and means between hills but also sunsets. The property was purchased by its
present owners in 1995 and includes a large farmhouse, originally the home
of two contadini (feudal farm workers) families, and four additional farm
buildings on almost 200 acres. The house and the barn have been restored,
combining modern amenities with a traditional Tuscan style. Tramonti is available
for vacation rentals and is used as the base for culinary, enological and
art workshops. For more information on the workshops visit www.the-clown.com.
WINERY
In the 1995/96 winter the owners constructed a small winery on the ground
floor level of the house putting stainless steel fermentation tanks in one
room and using a former stable for the French barriques used for the malolactic
fermentation and aging of the wines.
VINEYARDS
Three acres were planted in 1985. Eighty five percent with Sangiovese and
the remaining fifteen percent with Canaiolo, Malvasia and Trebbiano grapes,
the traditional Chianti Classico blend. Five acres were planted in the winter
of 1999/2000, which started to produce in 2002 and another 9 acres were
planted in the winter of 2000/2001. Ninety percent is planted with four different
clones of Sangiovese and the remaining ten percent are Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Syrah and Tanat. They are south and southwest facing.
