Marches is the only region in Italy with the name in the plural form, symbolizing the great variety of the land. Marches hills extend from the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea towards harmonic valleys which are mostly parallel.
Colonnara is in the heart of this region, in Cupramontana in the province of Ancona. It is a company that for over fifty years has been able to interpret with its wines the best the region can express. These are the hills of the Castelli di Jesi where, or centuries, the Verdicchio vine has found fits ideal habitat and where we make a wine that is unique to the region and cannot be duplicated in other locations.
The work in the wine cellar is subject to the same care as in the vineyard, to ensure an ideal production cycle. The transformation of the product takes place by using hightly advanced technologies to enhance its typical features. The process is carried out with care and enthusiasm, right up to the tangible expression of the ageing cellar.
Colonnara’s vineyards count a total of 120 hectares (300 acres), are conducted by 110 members, and are located in the oldest area for the production of Verdicchio grapes.
The micro-climate, which varies from area to area, the difference in altitude of the vineyards, ranging from 350m (1050ft) to 650m (2000ft) asl, and the different composition of soil, they all represent the company's great heritage, unrepeatable in other places, and therefore unique.
In particular, the location of the vineyards on the right bank of the Esino river makes the influence of the the Apennines more relevant than to those located on the left bank. In fact, they are located at a greater height and therefore the grapes ripen more slowly, thus maintaining characteristics of acidity, which in turn allow the wine to aging longer.
