The Azienda Nicolis Angelo & Figli is located in S. Pietro in Cariano, in the heart of the “Valpolicella classico” zone. The hills of the Valpolicella offer red and brown soils covering cretaceous marble, basalt, and Eocene limestone. These small valleys are abundant with small creeks that are almost always dry, since the water table is almost always lower than the streambed. Every valley offers geographic conditions that are slightly different, but all are characterized by favorable levels of calcium rich, rocky clay. In the entire Valpolicella region, the climatic conditions are relatively mild since it is somewhat protected by the pre-Alps in the north. The Valpolicella region is well exposed to the south and is also influenced by thermal breezes from Garda Lake, which also make winters rather mild. Most of the rainfall is concentrated in springtime and late autumn, while in summer; the clay soil tends to be rather dry and only occasional precipitations occur, accompanied by breezes flowing over the mountains and valleys. These unique geologic and climatic conditions ensure that the grapes grown in these areas are of the highest quality and are particularly well adapted for wines that are to undergo long aging periods.
The winery is headed by three brothers. Giancarlo takes accurate care of the grapevines, thus guaranteeing the quality of the fruit that is produced. Giuseppe, as an enologist, follows the process of vinification. Massimo helps the brothers with the commercial aspects and relations with foreign customers. Their mother Natalia continues to help in the family business. The facilities are state of the art, efficient for the various tasks and impecably clean.
The art of viticulture is a richness that the Nicolis family has passed on for generations with the cultivation of the family owned property: 90 hectars (222 acres), from which 42 (104 acres) are vineyards. From grapevines located in the lower hills, the soils are medium graded, profound, and fertile. From these, classic vintage wines are produced, while wines destined for aging like the prized Amarone are produced from grapevines grown in terraced hills.
